Since the founding of the faith, Sikhs have an inspiring history of standing up for those who have faced injustices. Our Gurus taught us concepts like ‘Sura so pehchania jo lade den ke heth’ and ‘Sarbat da Bhala’ to ensure we understand our broader responsibility to the world.
As Sikhs Americans, it is our duty to support human and civil rights universally and domestically. In light of recent events in our country, we stand in solidarity with the Black community as they continue to face countless challenges at the hands of systemic racism. We have to continue finding ways to educate our community on the obstacles that they face and help to dismantle historical systems of oppression in our country however we can.
Mental health and healing play an important role in sustainable social movements. This campaign seeks to support the work of the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective (BEAM). BEAM’s mission is to remove the barriers that Black people experience getting access to or staying connected with emotional healthcare through organizing, education, training and advocacy. The money we raise through this campaign will help BEAM increase their microgrant efforts for front-line doulas, therapists and community workers across the country. It will also expand their movement and coalition building work by helping fund a national roundtable dedicated to local and national policy change for Black and marginalized communities. These donations will support long-term social change within the Black community and all those who benefit from the Black community’s leadership in civil rights.
The following organizations are working in partnership with us on this campaign: Sikh Coalition, Sikh Family Center, Sikhnet, United Sikh Movement, Sikh Human Development Foundation, Sikhs of America, Jakara Movement, Kaur Life, Kaur Films, International Center for Advocates Against Discrimination, International Institute of Gurmat Studies, Camp Sikh Virsa, Tri-Valley Sikh Center and numerous other activists. Rather than giving individual gifts, we decided to come together to amplify our support and use this as a catalyst for future projects.
Our intent is to highlight and celebrate the work that BEAM is doing, we also recognize that there are countless other incredible community organizations doing amazing work across various issue areas with differing amounts of need. This campaign is simply one way in which Dasvandh Network and Sikh activists plan to leverage their platforms to stand in solidarity with the Black community in the many years to come.
Dasvandh Network will be collecting funds through Saturday, August 15th and will deliver a check to BEAM, extending the Sikh Community's hand in partnership.
