SikhLEAD - Building Future Leader and a Vision of Expansion
Our SikhLEAD program has been a tremendous success 10 years through both our Leadership Development Program and SikhLEAD Internship Program. Over the past few years, we have expanded its programming to the state of New Jersey, Chicago and New Mexico. In 2020, SALDEF placed 18 students at internship positions in congressional offices/ government agencies (such as in the office of Senator Chris Van Hollen, Representative Seth Moulton, D.C. Mayor's Office, etc.) and nonprofits across the country including the Council of Parliament of World Religions.
For 2021, we are planning further expansion into a number of other states to both develop young leaders and foster a growing relationship between local sangats and their representatives.
Our vision for SikhLEAD is to support a diverse, motivated and entrepreneurial group of young Sikh Americans as they prepare for a lifetime of community engagement and community leadership, by offering first-hand perspective into the functioning of the federal government and legislative process, and developing effective leaders committed to exploring and realizing the potential of the Sikh American community. The Internship Program is developed to encourage and foster young Sikh Americans to become more civically engaged and to work to drive and shape public policy and increase representation of Sikh Americans in public service nationwide.
