They were then subjected to torture and unimaginable cruelty because they followed their Guru’s path and refused to convert to Islam . They were offered the chance to spare their lives if they renounced the faith but they remained firm to Sikhism only .
Martyrdom
Bhai Mati Das' steadfast faith and fearless devotion to Sikhism led to his tragic martyrdom.
Aurangzeb, the tyrannical ruler, decided to set an example of firm followers of the Guru.
His determination & faith came to an end on July 24, 1675, when he was condemned to death in the most horrible way .
He was tied between two pillars and was offered a choice: embrace Islam or face death. Bhai Mati Das's response was simply inspiring . He refused to renounce his faith even when threatened with the most horrible execution imaginable. His belief in Sikhism remained firm.
In the final test of his faith, Bhai Mati Das was asked if he believed in the oneness of God. His reply "Ek Onkar" affirmed his belief in the oneness of God.
In a heartbreaking act of cruelty, he was subjected to a horrific execution method known as "sawn in half alive" where he was cut in two parts and continued to recite Sikh prayers until his last breath..
