Bibi Rajni was a devoted Sikh woman known for her faith in God during the time of Guru Ram Das Ji, the fourth Sikh Guru. Her story is an example of the power of devotion and the miracles that faith can bring into one's life. Bibi Rajni's life reflects the virtues of humility, devotion, and the transformative power of faith.

Early Life and Devotion
Bibi Rajni was born into a wealthy family, as her father was a kardar (tax collector) in a village near Amritsar. Despite growing up in a privileged environment, she was deeply religious and believed that everything in life, whether happiness or hardship, was due to Waheguru’s (God's) will. Her faith was strong, and she remained humble, always acknowledging that all blessings came from God.
Her father, however, had a different perspective. He took great pride in his wealth and success, believing that it was his own hard work that had brought prosperity to the family. Unlike Bibi Rajni, he did not attribute his achievements to divine grace but rather to his own efforts.
One day, while walking through their father’s estate, Bibi Rajni and her sisters saw a group of saints meditating and singing kirtan (hymns) in praise of God. Rajni was deeply moved by their devotion and stayed behind to listen to their spiritual teachings. She felt inspired and, as an act of gratitude, removed her gold jewelry and gave it to the saints as an offering.
When she returned home without her ornaments, her father was furious and demanded to know what had happened. In the discussion that followed, her sisters agreed with their father, saying that their wealth and good life were due to his hard work. However, Bibi Rajni firmly maintained that it was God’s grace that had provided for them, not their father’s efforts alone.
This statement enraged her father, who saw it as a challenge to his authority. To teach her a lesson, he decided to make her experience life’s hardships firsthand. He believed that once she faced difficulties, she would realize that survival depended on human efforts, not on faith alone.
Marriage to a Leper
Determined to prove his point, Bibi Rajni's father made a harsh decision. He declared that he would marry her off to the next man who passed by their house, regardless of his condition or background. He was certain that a difficult marriage would break her strong faith in God.
As fate would have it, the next person to appear was a man suffering from leprosy—a disease that left him weak, disfigured, and unable to walk properly. True to his word, Rajni’s father arranged the marriage immediately.
While others might have seen this as a curse or punishment, Bibi Rajni accepted it as God’s will. She did not protest or complain. Instead, she embraced her new life with patience and devotion, seeing her husband as a person who also deserved care and respect.
Since her husband was unable to walk, she carried him in a basket wherever they went. Despite the challenges, she remained faithful and continued to serve him with love and dedication. Instead of questioning her fate, she trusted that Waheguru had a reason for everything.
This phase of Bibi Rajni’s life tested her faith, but she remained steadfast in her belief that God’s plan was always for the best. Her unwavering devotion would soon lead to a miraculous event that changed their lives forever.
The Miracle
As Bibi Rajni continued to care for her ailing husband, she never lost faith in Waheguru’s will. One day, while traveling, she stopped near a small pool of water to rest. She placed her husband under the shade of a tree and went in search of food.
While she was away, her husband noticed a crow flying down to the pool and dipping itself in the water. To his astonishment, when the bird emerged, its black feathers had turned completely white. This strange sight made him curious, and he began to wonder whether the pool had some special powers.
Although he was weak and unable to walk properly, he was filled with hope. He dragged himself towards the pool and, with great effort, managed to dip his body into the water.
As soon as he immersed himself, something incredible happened. His diseased skin began to heal, and the painful sores disappeared. His limbs, which had been weak and crippled by leprosy, were restored to full strength. By the time he stepped out of the water, he was completely cured. The man who had once been sick and helpless now stood strong and healthy.
This transformation was nothing short of a miracle. The same man who had once been carried in a basket was now able to stand on his own feet. His heart was filled with gratitude, and he eagerly awaited Bibi Rajni’s return to share the incredible news.
Recognition by Guru Ram Das Ji
When Bibi Rajni returned, she was shocked to see a healthy man standing in place of her ailing husband. At first, she could not recognize him and thought that a stranger had come near her resting place. She searched around for her husband, fearing that something had happened to him.
Seeing her confusion, the man stepped forward and explained everything that had occurred—the crow, the pool, and his miraculous recovery. Bibi Rajni was overwhelmed with joy and thanked Waheguru for His divine grace. She now understood that her faith had been rewarded in the most unexpected way.
The couple then decided to visit Guru Ram Das Ji, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs, to seek his blessings and share their experience.
When they reached the Guru, they narrated the entire story of how the healing waters had cured the man’s leprosy. Guru Ram Das Ji listened patiently and then smiled, explaining that the pool was blessed by divine power. He told them that those who had faith in Waheguru and bathed in the holy water with a pure heart would be freed from their suffering.
Guru Ram Das Ji then declared that this sacred pool would be known as "Dukh Bhanjani", which means “eradicator of suffering.” This pool, which had already shown its miraculous power, later became an integral part of Sri Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple) and is now known as the Dukh Bhanjani Beri Sahib.
The story of Bibi Rajni’s faith and her husband’s healing spread far and wide, inspiring many to strengthen their devotion to Waheguru. To this day, Sikhs and devotees from all over the world visit the Dukh Bhanjani Beri Sahib to seek spiritual and physical healing, believing in the same divine grace that cured Bibi Rajni’s husband centuries ago.
Establishment of Gurdwara Dukh Bhanjani Sahib
The sacred site where Bibi Rajni’s husband was miraculously cured later became known as Gurdwara Dukh Bhanjani Sahib. This gurdwara is located within the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar and is one of the most revered places of worship for Sikhs.
After Guru Ram Das Ji recognized the healing powers of the pool, it became a place of faith and devotion. Over time, the site was developed into a gurdwara, where devotees could come to pray and seek relief from their sufferings. The pool itself was preserved and remains an integral part of the Amrit Sarovar, the holy water tank surrounding Sri Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple).
Significance of Gurdwara Dukh Bhanjani Sahib
Pilgrims from all over the world visit Gurdwara Dukh Bhanjani Sahib, believing that the sacred waters of the Dukh Bhanjani Beri Sahib have the power to heal both physical and spiritual ailments. Many Sikhs and devotees dip in the holy waters with faith, just as Bibi Rajni’s husband did, hoping for Waheguru’s blessings in their lives.
The gurdwara serves as a symbol of faith and reminds devotees of Bibi Rajni’s deep devotion to Waheguru. Her belief in God’s will, despite hardships, ultimately led to a miracle that is now remembered by generations of Sikhs. The site also reinforces the Sikh principle of accepting God’s will (Hukam) with patience and trust.
