This November marks the 40th anniversary of the 1984 genocide of Sikhs on the streets, in homes, and in businesses in the capital city of New Delhi, and many cities across India. Tens of thousands lost their lives and millions carry the pain of this tragedy in their hearts around the globe from India and the United States to Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and beyond.
In honor of those lost, and the resilience of those who lived, resisted and built new lives, artist/storyteller/advocate Vishavjit Singh, ICAAD (a international human rights center), and the Sikh Coalition are partnering to host a multi-media art exhibit in New York City from October 31st-November 9th to commemorate this tragic and pivotal moment in the annals of global history.
Creators from diverse traditions will exhibit works of art ranging from illustrations, sculptures, rare photographs, videos and poetry. It will also feature speakers and musical performances, and Amnesty International Human Rights Defender and author Sanam Sutirath Wazir will be joining us as a keynote speaker and will be showcasing his new book The Kaurs of 1984. We will also be joined by survivor and singer Dilbagh Singh and Stephen Dumcombe, Professor at NYU and co-founder of the Center for Artistic Activism.
We cannot make this exhibit happen without your support. Your donation today will cover the cost of the gallery space, printing, supplies for creation, travel for a survivor and other artists, shipping of art pieces, etc.
This exhibit is being hosted in New York City, a global hub and home to many Sikhs who survived the 1984 genocide, including Vishavjit, along with many fellow citizens from around the globe who have escaped persecution and intolerance in search for safer homes.
We invite you to support us in manifesting this exhibit of remembrance, offering thousands the opportunity to experience and reflect on the significance of this history in person.
The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people. - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
