How many Sikh American leaders can you name in the US government?

Currently,  there are only around 30 Sikh elected officials throughout the country primarily at the state and local level – no match for the sizable population of 500,000 Sikhs in America.

In response to the lack of Sikh representation in the American government, the SikhLEAD Initiative was created to develop the next generation of transformational Sikh American leaders.

Our SikhLEAD Internship Program

For 12 years, SALDEF’s SikhLEAD Internship program has recruited over 450 diverse young leaders from over 30 states. These leaders make a difference from serving as a trial attorney at the US Department of Justice to a second lieutenant in the US Air Force. The SikhLEAD program is open to all 50 states and provides high school and college students with Internships in state and local government as well as with partner
organizations across the country.

From SikhLEAD alumni who served as the Deputy Attorney General at the California Department of Justice to recent alumni serving on staff at Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s Office, SikhLEAD continues to build the pipeline of future Sikh leaders and public servants. Not only does this Summer Internship program expose Sikh youth to careers in government, but the program also benefits legislators who, through the Sikh interns, are able to connect with the Sikh community in their area and address community issues such as hate crimes and misrepresentation.

The Internships for our 2023 cohort, to name a few, ranged from Sen Schumer in DC, CAPAL, APIAVote, Becket Law firm, Parliament of World's Religions, State Senators & US State Reps offices to Sikh American organizations like SAVA (Sikh American Veterans Alliance), Colorado Sikhs, Dasvandh Network, Sikh American History Project. A few Interns also interned with the SALDEF Policy, Communications & Resources departments. On the SEVA project side, the DC cohort facilitated Langar on the Hill in Washington DC and the Regional cohort ran SEVA Health Clinics that were free health clinics organized at different Gurdwaras across the country with the help of physician and non-physician volunteers.

Support the Next Generation of Sikh American Leaders

Your donation will support the next generation of Sikh American leaders as we prepare to welcome our 2024 SikhLEAD DC & Regional cohorts this summer. Plus, DONATIONS TO THIS EFFORT ARE BEING MATCHED DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR!"

“The SikhLEAD program has given me the chance to work with a member of the legislative assembly and gain so much experience.  I want to continue on this pathway and study criminal justice and public policy. This internship with Assemblyman Benson helped me to navigate this pathway. I want to give back to my community and be able to help the nation while representing my Sikh identity.” - Jasraj Baweja, SikhLEAD Intern

SikhLEAD Internship Washington, DC and Regional

Our 2024 program has ended and we are eagerly working on recruitment outreach for our 2025 SikhLEAD program! Celebrating 10 years of the SikhLEAD Regional Program - a milestone year - we have chosen the theme of “Seva SatisfACTION - Seva in Action” and have some unique programming we are excited to implement.

As a few firsts, towards the end of 2024:

Summer end/Fall: SikhLEADer-led SikhVOTE signature program, engaging Sikhs and the greater Asian community in their civic duty, via outreach initiative to work. We completed 40+ tabling sessions in 9 different states, reaching 6000+ Sikh individuals!!
Fall/Winter: We are completing outreach to low and no-participant states i.e. midwest regions, by calling individual Gurdwaras contacts and planning our travel for in-person outreach to new states.

Adhering to our program’s theme for the 2025 year, we are curating our programming with a few new ideas:

Inviting Sevadaars (a variety of Sikh professionals who conduct Seva outside their work) to speak on their contributions
Welcoming the following new partner organizations and many additional: ALHF - A Little Happiness Foundation, Mokxa Technologies, Sikh Health Network, United Sikh Movement, Sahaita, California Commission on Asian & Pacific Islander American Affairs (CAPIAA), Sparkling Hearth.

Specifically, updates from the National SikhLEAD program include: currently working on planning and executing a diverse theme of panels and speakers, focusing on building upon our speakers from last year, adding in sessions that include directly meeting with and listening to Congressional staffers involved in Sikh American policy issues, Sikh American staffers in the White House, and leaders in nonprofit leadership and consulting sectors.

Furthermore, we will be arranging events for our future SikhLEAD cohort such as tours of the White House and Supreme Court. All-in-all, we will be diversifying our speakers and programming events to fit the various professional and academic interests of our SikhLEAD cohort.

We will soon begin interviewing our SikhLEAD applicants and gauge an idea of their career interests and focus. We look forward to a fantastic SikhLEAD Regional 2025 Summer Program and thank you for your continued support!

Artful presentation by our Cohort for our partner organizations: Stop AAPI Hate and NAPAFASA
Welcoming the following new partner organizations: Mokxa Technologies, Sikh Health Network, United Sikh Movement, Sahaita, California Commission on Asian & Pacific Islander American Affairs (CAPIAA), Sparkling Hearth, to name a few.

Our cohort members interviewed, matched, and worked at existing prestigious Internships, from Sikh partner organizations such as: the Dasvandh Network (DVN), and Colorado Sikhs, to diverse partner organizations such as: Stop AAPI Hate, APIAVote and International Religious Freedom (IRF), to new organizations such as: Mokxa Technologies, Sikh Health Network, United Sikh Movement, Sahaita, expanding our reach beyond our congressional offices and venture in unconventional career paths, per the request of our cohort.

The SikhLEAD DC program gave its cohort members the opportunity to meet with Supreme Court officials and network with brilliant and ambitious members of the AANHPI communities. Most importantly, they were able to meet one-on-one with Sikh American leaders in law, the armed forces, and academia. They also were able to witness how federal executive agencies in the White House voted for policy that affected the Sikh American community. All-in-all, we are proud to have given our SikhLEADers a rewarding experience in Washington, DC.

SikhLEAD Internship Washington, DC and Regional

We are proud to announce that our SikhLEAD 2024 Summer Internship Program is well underway. Our theme this year is “Sikhi-inspired Leadership: Past, Present, Future”. We kicked off our SikhLEAD Orientation on June 8, with about 75 SikhLEAD DC and Regional SikhLEADers all being placed in their Internships and/or Seva Projects. Some of the DC cohort placements include - Sen Chuck Schumer, Beket Law, US Commission on Civil Rights and Rep Andy Kim.

The SikhLEAD DC orientation consisted of a brief presentation of the program, welcoming remarks by Kiran Kaur Gill, and a special guest speaker: Jaywin Singh Malhi, Trial Attorney of the Department of Justice. After the orientation, the SikhLEADers had their headshots taken on the steps of Capitol Hill. Our first Regional programming on June 19 with Jashdeep Dhillon (Former Jakara Fellow) and Manshaan Singh and Harsimran Kaur of the United Sikh Movement, through the theme of Sikhi-inspired relationship, providing such poised Sikhi-centric answers to many difficult questions, through sharing their candid experiences.

Through our speakership and panel series, we were able to enrich our DC cohort with a visit to the Supreme Court to meet Harmann Singh, Clerk to Justice Sotomayor. Harmann was able to give us a thorough tour of the inside of the court and spoke with our SikhLEADers about law school, the Supreme Court’s functions and significance, a Clerk’s daily tasks, and advice for future goals. We also had Cpt. Naureen Singh speak to the cohort about her journey as an Officer in the military. As a Sikh American woman, she gave inspiration to our cohort as an exemplary figure in the community.

Besides our speakership series, we have had our Interns meet with other organizations and participate in social networking mixers such as rooftop gathering and  a Congressional Reception in DC in which the SikhLEADers got to hear elected officials make remarks.

We continue our partnership with the Sikh Health Network (SHN) on starting new Seva Clinic locations, while sustaining our CA clinics from last year. These efforts are led by a SikhLEAD Regional Alumni who is now actively working with SHN! The states that we are focusing on for this year’s Clinics include: IL, MI, NC, CO, and CA, with our first ever Healthcare Talk about Heart health on June 9 at Santa Ana, where our first clinic, too, will occur on July 7, 2024.

During the second quarter, the primary focus of the SikhLEAD program was Internship placements of all the SikhLEADers. The Programs team worked with the candidates individually to polish resumes and cover letters, as well as to go over interview skills. A few Interns are also interning with the SALDEF Policy, Communications & Resources departments.

By June, all SikhLEAD cohort members were placed in Internships with support from the SALDEF Programs team. SikhLEAD 2023 Summer Internship DC & Regional

The first quarter is critical in laying the foundation for the SikhLEAD Summer Internship Program. It allows SALDEF to properly assemble and finalize a cohort of intelligent and passionate students while considering possible offices for their Internship placements and relevant programming. During this quarter, the SikhLEAD 2023 Program recruited a total of 55 candidates, with 46 students participating in the Regional Program and 9 students in the DC program with a representation from 18 different states.

The SALDEF team primarily focused on Intern placements for their Summer Internships. We ensured that the Interns applied to a variety of Internships and facilitated this process for them by building new relationships and tapping into the established ones with the different offices. The Internship placements included Congressional offices such as the offices of Senator Schumer, Senator Manka Dhingra, US Rep Rob Wittman, Nonprofits such as APIAVote, CAPAL and the IRF Secretariat..

This quarter was also focused on putting together the best of programming for the SikhLEAD 2023 cohort which includes a  blend of professional and faith-based topics. From Sikhi inspired discussions and Leadership/Professional development sessions, to Sikh Elected officials panel to the Power of SALDEF’s Partnerships panel, roughly 20- 25 speakers were secured for the overall SikhLEAD programming this summer. SALDEF also partnered with the Sikh Health Network during this quarter to run Health clinics across the country as a SEVA project for the SikhLEADers.

The second quarter will build off the work and planning done in the first quarter by having the Interns begin their Internships and SEVA projects in June alongside participating in the SikhLEAD Program from June 10th - August 12th.
