Motivation
Bhai Avtar Singh Ragi was one of the most influential exponents of traditional Sikh Gurbani Kirtan in the modern era. Bhai Avtar Singh Ragi dedicated his life to preserving authentic Sikh Kirtan tradition rooted in the Rag-based structure of the Guru Granth Sahib.

His contributions include:
• Preserving traditional Rag-based Kirtan through the compilation of centuries-old compositions in the two volumes titled Gurbani Sangeet Pracheen Reet Ratnawali
• Inspiring the global sangat through recordings and live Kirtan performances
• Advocating the use of traditional Sikh musical instruments such as the Taus and Pakhawaj-Jori
• Mentoring disciples and encouraging the continuation of Guru–Shishya musical training traditions

Despite his profound influence, a comprehensive documentation of his life and contributions has not yet been produced.
Without such documentation, an important chapter of Sikh musical heritage risks being forgotten.

To preserve this invaluable heritage, Nad Music Institute (NMI), in collaboration with Bhai Kultar Singh’s family, proposes the publication of a comprehensive book documenting the life, teachings, and enduring legacy of Bhai Avtar Singh Ragi.

This volume will combine a scholarly biography with personal reflections from disciples, scholars, and members of the global sangat. Together, these perspectives will present both the historical and human dimensions of Bhai Sahib’s life.

The book will serve as an important historical resource and a source of inspiration for future generations of Sikh musicians, scholars, and devotees of Gurbani Kirtan.
