Amrik Singh Memorial Fund will go to support causes near Amrik's heart. Including Humanitarian Service (Seva) Organizations and towards Cancer Research.
Born in Randhawa, Punjab, India to Roor Singh & Puran Kaur, Amrik Singh. He grew up with his four brothers, Jagir, Harjeet, Malkit and Himmat and two sisters Tejo and Gurmeet. He was a happy child who enjoyed the simple things in life; a warm samosa or fresh jalebi would make his day.
He grew up in Delhi, and eventually completed his higher studies to become a Surveyor.
As a Surveyor, Amrik was stationed in Rajasthan and mapped out uncharted territory while camping and enjoying life as a bachelor exploring the world around him. When he would come back to Delhi to visit he would step into the role of disciplinarian, he was known as the loving but strict Chachaji to all the children.
On October 22, 1972. He married Darshan Kaur, the younger sister of Amrik’s third Bhabi Gian. The newlyweds moved to Rajasthan where they lived in the camps while learning about each other.
The couple then decided to take on their next adventure when his wife, Darshan, moved to New York in 1975. They set up their new home base in New York in 1978, when Amrik joined his "forever love", Darshan, in the Bronx, New York. In 1987 the family of four made their leap purchasing their home in Queens, NY with the love and support from his brother Malkiat.
In a new country, Amrik looked for and found work at Media Records in the processing department. Once employed, his first major purchase was a Plymouth Volare, and four days later the couple were off on a road trip to see the family in Toronto. This tradition of driving to Canada at any opportunity continued until 2016 with Amrik as the sole driver. He loved driving so much, he never blinked an eye at the distance.
In 1980, the Singhs were blessed with their first child, son Navjot, affectionately called Minku. Two years later, Kiranjot (Mintu) arrived on scene, rounding out their family of four.
Amrik's life and home were always filled with family, friends and Gurbani. His bright smile was infectious. One very memorable thing about Amrik was that he liked things done in a certain way. Of course, this was, without doubt, "the right way". He never shied away from sharing "the why", focusing on the rationale; his principles, thoughts and opinions.
Amrik Singh was no stranger to hard work, and would do absolutely anything to support his family. This led him to eventually purchase a New York cab medallion. He drove all over this city he loved, learning every street, shortcut, nook and cranny, all while playing an active role in raising Minku and Mintu with Darshan.
His unwavering and pure dedication to Sikhi was apparent to each person who met him, even if it's for a few minutes. From sitting at the front of the Darbar Hall at gurughar, to slipping quietly out to read daily Gurbani. Amrik was a true and practicing Gursikh, in all aspects of his life, believing in the Hukam and power and strength in Gurbani.
Amrik served on the Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society Committee, Richmond Hill, and performed Trustee duties with firm Sikh principles.
In 2007, he cheerfully retired and kicked off the next phase of life. He traveled to India, every year, staying primarily in Delhi to spend maximum time with his brother, sister and family. He enjoyed yatras to the Gurdwaras all over India, including Hemkund Sahib and Nankana Sahib, living like a local, even getting his Indian Driver’s License.
Through Minku and Mintu, Amrik, gained two loving daughters, by marriage, Gurpreet and Ravin. Blessed with three grandsons: Gurnav, Kavan and Ayaan. Being a "long distance" Dadhu was new territory for Amrik, but he thoroughly cherished the extra love, hugs, flying kisses, Facetimes and phone calls.
In 2019 Amrik was diagnosed with MDS, a type of blood cancer, which sadly changed into Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) diagnosed in February of 2022. Through the non-stop treatments, clinical trials, doctors’ appointments and 3 times/week transfusions, Amrik stayed positive and held on to his belief in Hukam and Pana. His loving wife, Darshan, was at his side every single moment making sure Amrik was getting the best available care. If she stepped away from his eyes even for a moment he would lovingly call out to her saying “Singhji.”
His legacy of love for family and Gurbani will be carried on in his wife, children, grandchildren, family & friends.
