What is COP 27?
The world’s most significant summit on climate change is the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, otherwise known as COP.
This conference is attended by representatives of the countries that have ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – a treaty agreed in 1994. COP takes place each year unless the Parties to the Convention agree otherwise. 2022 will see the 27th session of the conference, that is why it’s referred to as COP27.
The COP comes together to review the implementation of the UNFCCC, which has the ultimate goal of limiting human impact on our climate system. One key task is to monitor each country’s progress towards their individual targets, known as Nationally Determined Contributions.
The Sharm el-Sheik Climate Change conference will take place from 6-18 November 2022. More details can be found here.
How are we involved?
Sikh Human Rights Group (SHRG) is accredited for COP 27 and subsequent COPs as it has observer status at UNFCCC. We are taking a delegation of 6. Two are from Nishan-e Sikhi, Khadur Sahib, ecology project. Others are from our workers and volunteers. We intend to network, make statements where possible and plan a much bigger presence for next year with stalls etc, showcasing GurSikhi's perspective and approach to ecology, climate change and environment. Costs are substantive, we seek another $10000 to meet these.
