The show Deserted Gems brings us that critical intersection of gemstones and culture from the deserted parts of America. The creator utilizes shovel/jack-hammers/hand first into dirt and raw stones along with Niranjan Singh (a veteran gemstone miner) while simultaneously giving his audience a look into gemstone miners, their life, and culture.
But he doesn't go about it pretentiously. Instead, often avoiding conventional conversations, the creator spends the time indulging in rough, uncut gemstones and starts a dialogue with local ex-pats or miners (sometimes both).
Topics of discussion often revolve around inherent lifestyles and history as well as how they came to be. Be it the American dream, the American identity, political or economic development, Niranjan keeps a constant cultural exchange flowing along with the local miners.
The show ensures that gemstones and culture are not mutually exclusive but profoundly interconnected and shed light on realities & conditions when viewed together.
