From Seeds to Harvest: Cultivating Sikh Leadership with SikhLEAD
For over a decade, SALDEF’s SikhLEAD Program has planted the seeds of leadership in Sikh youth across the nation, nurturing them into strong, capable changemakers. Like the bountiful harvest of Vaisakhi, we celebrate the growth of these young leaders who are stepping up to serve their communities and strengthen Sikh representation in career fields across the country.
Sowing the Seeds of Leadership
How many Sikh American leaders can you name in the U.S. government?
Despite a thriving Sikh population of over 500,000, there are only about 30 elected Sikh officials in the country—primarily at the state and local levels. To bridge this gap, SikhLEAD was created to cultivate the next generation of Sikh American leaders and public servants.
Nurturing Future Changemakers: The SikhLEAD Internship Program
The SikhLEAD Program has guided over 500 young leaders from 30+ states, empowering them to grow into roles ranging from trial attorneys at the U.S. Department of Justice, to second lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force. This program provides high school and college students with internships in government and advocacy organizations across the nation, ensuring that Sikh youth have the opportunity to shape the future.
SikhLEAD alumni have flourished, serving in key positions such as:
🌱 Deputy Attorney General at the California Department of Justice
🌱 Legislative Staff for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer
🌱 United States Supreme Court Law Clerk
🌱 Deputy Chief of Staff, National Security Council
Through this program, lawmakers gain a deeper connection with the Sikh community, addressing issues such as hate crimes and misrepresentation—ensuring that our voices are not only heard but respected and represented.

This internship with Assemblyman Benson helped me navigate my career path in criminal justice and public policy. I want to serve my community, help the nation, and represent my Sikh identity.”
