  Getting Nepal Ready for Winter: UNITED SIKHS Calls

  
  

  As winter approaches Nepal's flood-affected regions, thousands of families continue to face immense hardship after devastating floods displaced communities, destroyed homes, and disrupted livelihoods. Many families remain in temporary shelters or damaged homes.

  
  

  In response, UNITED SIKHS has launched its Winter Relief Campaign, building on months of humanitarian assistance provided across Nepal. Guided by the Sikh principle of Seva (selfless service), the organization is mobilizing support to ensure families receive the supplies they need to face the winter. Through the generosity of donors and supporters around the world, UNITED SIKHS aims to deliver life-saving winter kits to those who need them most.
  

  
  
  Among those most in need are approximately 1,100 flood-displaced individuals from Syabrubesi, Timure, and other flood-affected communities in Rasuwa, whose lives were uprooted by the recent disaster. Now sheltering in monasteries in Kathmandu's Swayambhu-Nagarjun area, these families face a new challenge as winter approaches. Yellow Gumba (Ghosak Gumba), the largest shelter site, is home to around 400 evacuees, while Mustang Gumba is providing refuge to approximately 700 people across two buildings. 
  

  Through this campaign, UNITED SIKHS will provide winter relief kits worth approximately NPR 7,000 each, containing a jacket, flask, jogger, hot water bottle, blanket, shawl, socks, and backpack. More than just supplies, these kits represent a reminder that those affected by the floods have not been forgotten.

  
  

  For survivors who have already endured weeks of displacement, the arrival of winter presents a new challenge. Temperatures in many affected regions drop significantly during the colder months, making access to warm clothing, bedding, and other essentials critical for the safety and well-being of children, elderly, and vulnerable families. Without adequate protection from the cold, daily life becomes increasingly difficult, particularly for those who have lost everything in the disaster.

  This campaign is not only about providing winter supplies; it is about standing beside communities during their most difficult moments. Every contribution helps reassure a family that they have not been forgotten and that together, we can help them move from survival toward recovery.

  UNITED SIKHS Launches Shelter Initiative for Nepal

  
  
  UNITED SIKHS, a United Nations–affiliated humanitarian aid and advocacy organization, has been at the forefront of disaster relief following the devastating floods that struck Nepal. Thousands of families have been displaced, and in response, UNITED SIKHS is laying the groundwork for a long‑term shelter project to provide safe housing for flood survivors.
  
  

  The Shelter Project

  
  

  UNITED SIKHS is preparing to launch Phase 3 of its mission which is a Shelter Project designed to provide safe and dignified housing for families who lost their homes.

  
  

  This initiative will begin with reconnaissance of affected areas and government-established shelter homes to assess feasibility and scope. The organization is engaging with partners such as Rotary Club Kathmandu and other local NGOs to explore collaboration. The shelter project is envisioned as a cornerstone of recovery, moving beyond temporary relief toward long-term stability. By constructing durable housing, UNITED SIKHS aims to restore security and a sense of permanence to families who have endured unimaginable loss.

  
  
  This next phase is more than just about rebuilding structures — it is about rebuilding lives. The shelter project will help transform the humanitarian response into a pathway for recovery, ensuring that survivors are supported as they begin to stand on their own again.
  
  

  Immediate Needs for Winter

  As winter approaches, displaced families urgently need:

  In advancing this mission, UNITED SIKHS is proud to partner with DVN (Dasvandh Network), an online giving platform rooted in the Sikh tradition of service and collective responsibility. Through this collaboration, UNITED SIKHS and DVN are combining resources, expertise, and community-driven support to strengthen the shelter initiative and maximize its impact for families affected by the floods. This partnership ensures that donors worldwide can actively participate in rebuilding lives, transforming compassion into tangible relief for Nepal’s most vulnerable communities.

  
  
  

  Relief Operations to Date

  
  

  Since the onset of the floods, UNITED SIKHS has mobilized immediate and sustained relief efforts across multiple districts.

  
  

  For ten consecutive days, the organization ran a Langar Sewa (a free community kitchen) serving over 2,000 people daily with three hot meals. This effort not only sustained displaced families but also supported army personnel engaged in rescue operations. Clothing distributions ensured that individuals, especially children received essential garments, while first-aid kits were provided to families in holding centers to meet urgent medical needs.

  
  Beyond immediate relief, UNITED SIKHS has assisted families searching for missing loved ones who were returning from Kailash, coordinating with hospitals and government offices to provide verified updates. Survivors from Rasuwa villages, now sheltered in Kathmandu, received 350 side bags and supplies to help them regain stability. These operations reflect a commitment to structured, need-based relief rather than one-time distributions, ensuring resources reach the most vulnerable.
