Sikh Americans are one of the oldest Asian Pacific Islander (API) populations in the state of California. The first Sikhs arrived at the end of the 19th century and have contributed to the social and economic development of the state for more than 100 years. However, research on this population lacks support across the California public education system. There are a handful of faculty and historians with expertise in Sikh American Studies across California who have found it challenging to secure sustained support for the growth of the field from campus and university-wide resources. We hope to establish a fellowship focusing on Sikh Americans in California. The purpose of this fellowship would be to support community-engaged, policy-relevant research as well as historic preservation and education efforts for the inclusion of Sikh American experiences. The fellowship would be the first of its kind in California. With the assistance of the funding, we strive to fund full time staff positions for research as well travel and programming needs. We are aiming to accomplish the following with the fellowship: 1.) preserve Sikh American history through a publicly accessible digital archive; 2.) work with K-12 educators to develop and circulate curriculum based on the archive’s sources and 3.) work to designate Stockton Gurdwara, the first Sikh American institution in the United States, to the National Register of Historic Places.
