Sikhlens Destination S: Empowering Sikh Narratives Through Film

At Sikhlens, storytelling is more than a passion; it's our driving force. For years, we've had the privilege of hosting the Sikhlens Arts and Film Festival at Chapman University's renowned film school, where our partnership with the university's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts has been a constant source of inspiration. This collaboration, grounded in Chapman's commitment to global storytelling, has paved the way for our unique initiative known as Sikhlens Destination S.

Destination S is not just a program; it's a journey.

It's a journey that takes us across the globe, capturing the rich tapestry of Sikh narratives from different corners. These are migration stories, remarkable triumphs, heartfelt struggles, and poignant challenges. Under this initiative, we've proudly produced over 100 films that showcase the diversity, resilience, and beauty of the Sikh community. From the Sikh cheese makers in Italy to the heroic Sikh contributions during the World Wars, the diligent Blueberry farmers in North America, and the inspiring 24-episode journey of Guru Nanak Dev Ji—these films have resonated with audiences worldwide and are available on the Sikhlens YouTube channel.

So, why does the Sikhlens Destination S project matter? What makes it essential?

It matters because these stories matter. The Sikh community has a rich history and a vibrant present; these narratives deserve to be told. They serve as a bridge, connecting generations and cultures. They educate, inspire, and foster understanding among people of different backgrounds. Sikhlens Destination S is essential because it ensures that these stories are not left untold due to a lack of resources.

Our new initiative, the Sikhlens Destination S fund, seeks to raise $225,000. This fund represents a transformative leap forward for our storytelling endeavors. With this financial support, we will no longer have to wait for individual film funding, which often delays our projects. Instead, we can immediately greenlight new subjects, ensuring no story goes unheard. Our commitment is to produce six to eight films initially, with the potential to complete even more projects as funds grow.

How can donors help?

Donors play a pivotal role in amplifying the voices of the Sikh diaspora and etching their stories into the annals of history. Your support empowers us to create more films, reach wider audiences, and deepen the impact of these narratives. Every contribution, whether small or large, brings us closer to our goal and helps build bridges of understanding, one film at a time. Donate today! Hit the "Donate" button on this page to make an impact.

How will we be using the funds raised for our project?

The funds raised through the Sikhlens Destination S campaign will be used for various purposes to bring these important stories to life. This includes:

  • Production Costs: Funding will go toward producing high-quality films that accurately and respectfully portray Sikh narratives.
  • Equipment and Technology: We will invest in the latest filmmaking equipment and technology to ensure our productions meet the highest standards.
  • Pre-production Research: Research is a crucial aspect of our work. Donations will support the discovery and documentation of untold Sikh stories.
  • Outreach and Distribution: We'll use funds to promote our films, organize screenings, and distribute them to wider audiences, both within the Sikh community and beyond.

In conclusion, the Sikhlens Destination S fund is a remarkable opportunity to make a lasting impact on the representation of Sikh narratives in film. We invite you to join us on this storytelling journey, support our mission, and help us ensure these vital stories are told, shared, and celebrated. We can build a legacy of understanding and unity, one film at a time.

The extended goal will allow us to fund even more groundbreaking films. The Sikhlens advancement team is working tirelessly to ensure this additional funding can bring more compelling stories to the forefront.

This overwhelming support has sparked creativity and energy across our filmmaking community. We are proud to announce that eight distinct film projects are currently in various stages of development, each contributing to the diverse narrative of Sikh culture and universal human experiences.

Below is an update on these remarkable projects, including descriptions, production status, and, where available, visual sneak peeks into the unfolding stories.

The film's post-production has been delayed due to unforeseen bad weather in the mines, but we anticipate its release soon.

    Pothimala

This film, which explores the history, art, and preservation of the Pothimala gurdwara, is now completed and will be screened at the Sikhlens Arts and Film Festival in Southern California from November 21-24, 2024.

Currently, in the final stages of post-production, this film chronicles the inspiring rise of Kamal Singh, an international ballet star who grew from humble beginnings in India to perform on some of the world's most prestigious stages. Kamal Singh's film is slated to get premiered at the UK film festival on May 10th, 2025

This powerful film is also in its final post-production phase. It tells the inspiring story of Manpreet Kalra and Angad Singh, an activist couple navigating their careers and personal passions while impacting the world.

    Nina's Olivar

This project is nearing completion in post-production. It captures Nina's venture into the olive oil business during a holiday abroad, blending her journey as an American Sikh with a flourishing Spanish olive oil business.

    Dancing in the Dark

Now in its final post-production phase, this film recounts the extraordinary life of Amarjeet Singh Chawla, a blind Sikh man who has completed 100 marathons and holds a Guinness World Record. His resilience and achievements offer inspiration to all.

Some films have been added since our last update:

    The Patka Box

This documentary focuses on the cultural significance of the Patka, a head covering worn by Sikh children, and how it can be an educational tool to promote understanding, prevent bullying, and foster inclusion in schools. The film has already screened at Sikhlens Vancouver and is slated for upcoming screenings in Toronto, California, and Seattle.

    Bold Helmets

This film highlights Tina Singh's creation of a multisport helmet designed for children with Jooda, making sports safer and more inclusive. Bold Helmets has already been screened at Sikhlens Vancouver and is scheduled for screenings in Toronto, California, and Seattle.

    Raah-E-Nanak

This upcoming documentary, set to premiere at Sikhlens California, traces a journey across Northern India, showcasing acts of kindness inspired by Sufi and Sikh teachings. It's a heartfelt exploration of how compassion transcends cultural boundaries.

Each of these films reflects a unique voice, providing fresh insights and untold stories that celebrate Sikh heritage and resonate with universal human experiences. These films are a testament to our collective effort to preserve and share the narratives that shape our community.

Many of these projects will debut at the upcoming Sikhlens Arts and Film Festival, November 21-24, 2024.
