"What Should Ajeet Singh Do?" started with my own kids. The characters — Ajeet, Simer, and Kirpa — are named for them, because every story grew out of real moments in their lives: a paper airplane contest, a four-square game, a pop quiz, a lost trading card.

It's a "many stories in one" book. At key moments the story pauses and asks young readers: What should Ajeet Singh do? Should he peek at the answers slipped to him during a quiz, or throw the note away? Kids make the choice themselves — then see where it leads.

Sikh children almost never get to be the hero of the story. Ajeet wears a dastar, says a small prayer when he feels greedy, and is also just a kid learning about fairness, honesty, and kindness. For Sikh kids, that's seeing themselves on the page. For every other child, it's meeting a Sikh friend before "different" ever becomes strange.
