    Bani Release: Mundavani

The Guru Granth Sahib Project is pleased to announce the annotation of three saloks associated with Mundavani. Traditionally, saloks are not assigned a specific rag (musical mode).

Within the Guru Granth Sahib, the term 'mudavani' or 'mundavani' appears in two saloks: one by Guru Amardas Sahib and one by Guru Arjan Sahib. Collectively, these saloks serve as a key to understanding the core message of the Guru Granth Sahib.

Bani Release: Salok Sheikh Farid Ji Salok - 93-130

The Guru Granth Sahib Project is pleased to launch the annotation of twenty-seven saloks (ninety-three through one hundred-thirty) by Sheikh Farid Ji, one of the fifteen Bhagat contributors to the Guru Granth Sahib. Traditionally, saloks do not have a prescribed rag (musical mode). His total compositions in the Guru Granth Sahib include four Sabads and one hundred and twelve saloks. The four Sabads were published in July, and the saloks are being released in five parts from August through December this year.

In saloks ninety-three through one hundred thirty, Sheikh Farid Ji reminds us that the entire world remains under the sway of death. Even the most well-nourished bodies cannot escape it; when old age arrives, even the once strong become weak. Despite this, people remain self-absorbed, accumulating possessions and seeking comfort in them. Sheikh Farid Ji reminds us that living simply in remembrance of IkOankar, the Divine, is more meaningful than dwelling in grand mansions or palaces.

Bani Release: Salok Sheikh Farid Ji - Salok 1-15

The Guru Granth Sahib Project is pleased to launch the annotation of the first fifteen saloks by Sheikh Farid Ji, one of the fifteen Bhagat contributors to the Guru Granth Sahib. Saloks traditionally do not have a prescribed rag (musical mode). His compositions in the Guru Granth Sahib include four Sabads and one hundred and twelve saloks. The four Sabads were previously published in July, and the saloks will be released in five parts from August through December this year.

The first fifteen saloks by Sheikh Farid Ji convey that the span of every being’s life is predetermined and finite. The being has come into this world to engage in devotion of IkOankar (the Divine) and to live a life of humility and non-attachment. Yet, burdened by the attachment to transient things and relationships, they wander, unaware of their true purpose. Worldly desire leads them astray.

Bani Release: Var Sat (Mahala 3) 2/2

The Guru Granth Sahib Project is pleased to launch the annotation of Var Sat (Mahala 3) 2/2, a composition revealed by Guru Amardas Sahib in Rag Bilaval, a musical mode that evokes feelings of bliss and happiness.

In this composition, Guru Amardas Sahib emphasizes that IkOankar (the Divine) is the Creator of the entire creation. It illustrates how beings attached to transient things and relationships remain trapped in the cycle of birth and death. Those who remember and enshrine the eternal Wisdom (Guru) within their hearts recognize IkOankar as the cause of all that unfolds in the world. For them, IkOankar becomes a shield against vices. Guided by the Wisdom, they transcend the cycle of birth and death and free themselves from worldly sufferings.

The Guru Granth Sahib Project is pleased to launch the annotation of Var Sat (Mahala 3) 1/2, a composition revealed by Guru Amardas Sahib in Rag Bilaval, a musical mode that evokes feelings of bliss and happiness.

Var Sat, commonly known as ‘Satvar’ or ‘Satvara,’ is an old and popular poetic form based on the seven days of the week. In it, each stanza begins with a particular day of the week and describes an idea, sentiment, or belief associated with that day. In the Guru Granth Sahib, two compositions have been revealed in the ‘Var Sat’ poetic form. This includes one by Bhagat Kabir Ji in Rag Gauri and one by Guru Amardas Sahib in Rag Bilaval.

    Bani Release: Thiti (Mahala 1)

The Guru Granth Sahib Project is pleased to launch the annotation of the composition Thiti revealed by Guru Nanak Sahib in Rag Bilaval, a musical mode associated with bliss and happiness.

Thiti refers to a lunar calendar day—a count from the first to the fifteenth day based on the moon's phases. As a poetic form, Thiti is based on the fifteen lunar days of the Indic calendar months. The Guru Granth Sahib contains three such compositions by Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Arjan Sahib, and Bhagat Kabir Ji, respectively. In his Thiti, Guru Nanak Sahib dispels illusions and superstitions by emphasizing devotion and contemplation of IkOankar (the Divine). In this twenty-pauri (stanza) composition, each lunar day serves as a thematic anchor.
