Since 1994, Raj Academy has been conducting extensive and groundbreaking research in the field of Gurmat Kirtan — the original Sikh musical tradition designed to empower individuals to live a sound life.

Our findings and insights have resulted in transformative educational programs and invaluable resources, including the first-ever complete recording of all 60 Raags, numerous articles and lectures, and our multi-award-winning documentary, “Sikh Musical Heritage – The Untold Story.”

As the documentary reveals, colonialism deeply disrupted the original practice of Gurmat Kirtan, pushing a once-flourishing heritage into the shadows, where it survived only in secrecy. Through years of careful study, we have unearthed original manuscripts and documented orally transmitted wisdom, continuously refined our notes, and reconstructed a detailed understanding of the original purpose, method, and technique of Gurmat Kirtan — a philosophical and psychological framework unlike any other, with enormous potential to advance our understanding of mental and emotional health.

Now, after more than three decades of work, led by Professor Surinder Singh, we are ready to present this lifetime of study as a comprehensive foundational work on Gurmat Kirtan. This forthcoming hardcover publication will explore its cultural, philosophical, and spiritual foundations, while providing an in-depth analysis of the emotional and technical dimensions of all 60 Raags.

This book is not only a reclaiming of Sikh musical heritage, but also a gift to humanity, offering insight and guidance for a time-tested practice that has helped people connect, grow, and live with joy for centuries.
